Additional Study for Advanced Students

Our martial arts heritage comes from the Moo Duk Kwan, which means School of Martial Virtue. It was originally a Tang Soo Do Dojang created by Founder Hwang Kee after Japanese occupation ended at the close of World War II.

Tang Soo Do means Way of the China Hand (the word “Tang” refers to China’s Tang Dynasty). Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art that existed for a couple decades before Taekwondo was created. The Moo Duk Kwan interpretation of Tang Soo Do was created by Founder Hwang Kee through his study of the ancient Korean art of Taekkyon, the study of several Karate styles, and traditional Chinese martial arts.

Tang Soo Do evolved over time into the art of Soo Bahk Do that we train in today.
